1 John: Assurance through Allegiance & Abiding

2.24.19 - 1 John 5:1-5

Three times in 1 John 5:1-5 John speaks of the believer overcoming the world. What a glorious promise! According to vv. 4-5, those who have been born of God, who trust in Jesus, overcome the world. What does this mean? It is related to the doctrine of perseverance. In these verses we see that God's children shall be victorious over the worldly powers that are constantly seeking to bring the church out of step with the Spirit of God. The powers that oppose God, His King, and the King's people will not succeed. In Christ we have the power to say "no" to the world and "yes" to God. In Christ we have the power to overcome sin. Who or what enables this ongoing victory? Through the regenerating work of the Spirit, we are moved to see the matchless beauty of King Jesus with the eyes of faith (see 2 Cor. 3:18). The world will continue to offer us idols that can't deliver, idols that will vie for our heart's attention, but the Spirit gives us faith to see that Jesus is greater; that only He can satisfy; that only He can give life. The Spirit seals us for the purpose of perseverance (see Ephesians 1:13-14). Praise God!
