Following The King

11.19.17 Sermon - Mark 15:21-41

At the Cross Jesus was exiled for exiles; He was cut off for us so that we might be brought near to God! In this week's passage, Mark 15:21-41, we finally come to the climax of Mark's gospel-the death of Jesus! Rich with symbolism, our passage depicts creation testifying to the most awesome event in history-the death of the Son of God for sinners. Darkness covers the land signifying the outpouring of God's judgement. The recipient? Not the thieves on either side of Jesus; not the unruly crowd; not the Roman authorities. Instead, we find the holy, righteous and sinless Son of Man receiving in Himself on the Cross the punishment of God for the sin of the world. What grace! What love! What mercy! How have you responded to the Cross? Let's remember Jesus' words in Mark 1:15 which point to this moment in Mark's gospel: "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel."
