Ephesians: The Gospel in Everyday Life

3.18.18 - Ephesians 4:25-32

The flow of our passage today (Ephesians 4:25-32) moves like this: put off the old self (old sinful behavior); put on the new self (Christ-like character); and then Paul provides the church with the reason or purpose for the action of putting off and putting on! As we've seen already in our study of Ephesians, the Gospel, and one's proper response to the Gospel (repentance and faith), results in a new relationship with a new King (Jesus), a new heart (with new desires), a new power (the Holy Spirit) and a new people (the church). In order to honor our new King, in the context of the new people, and for their edification, we are given a new heart and the Holy Spirit for the purpose of living like our new King! The exhortation to put off the old self and to put on the new self is made possible by the Spirit! May we as a church family pray for the Spirit's work amongst our brothers and sisters in Christ of helping them to put off old sinful behavior that characterizes our old citizenship (domain of darkness) and to put on new Christ-imitating and Christ-honoring behavior that characterizes our new citizenship as those who have been transferred to the Kingdom of God's beloved Son (Colossians 1:13).
