The Marks of a Disciple

8.2.20 - Peace Out and Peace In! (Matthew 5:9)

As a Christian have you ever wondered, “What should I be doing?” Jesus points us to our vocation in Matthew 5:9. If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, and part of His church, then you are called to be a peacemaker. The work of peacemaking has two primary applications. The first is vertical. As Christians, we are called to preach the gospel, wherever we go, to see unbelievers reconciled to God. In Romans 5:1 Paul writes, “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” The Great Commission is a peacemaking mission! We are to go and bring sinners into relational harmony (peace) with God by telling them the good news of Jesus Christ and calling them to repent and believe in Jesus! The second application is horizontal. The work of peacemaking applies to the local church. When believers are at odds, it is our job to bring these believers back together in fellowship (Philippians 4:2-3). The church must be marked by relational peace and unity for the sake of its witness before the watching world. We got work to do!
