The Marks of a Disciple

8.9.20 - Persecution Pays! (Matthew 5:10)

As we’ve discussed already, the Beatitudes of Jesus often appear strange and out of place to the world. The eighth and final beatitude may even appear this way to believers. Naturally, we don’t associate blessing with persecution. And yet, what we learn in God’s word is that the persecution of Christ’s church has redemptive value. When we are persecuted because of our allegiance to Christ, we identity with our King, we encourage other Christians to remain faithful to the King, and by the Spirit, we draw unbelievers to the King. Jesus told His followers to expect suffering. Why? Because He suffered (John 15:20)! The important thing to remember is that Jesus established a pattern that is also true for those who have trusted in Him. Jesus was opposed and persecuted. He was killed! And yet, three days later He rose again. If we align our lives to Christ, and we should, opposition and persecution will come in some form or another. However, we know that death is not the end. Like Jesus, we too shall be raised. Suffering will give way to glory! Knowing this enables the church to suffer persecution with poise and peace. Hallelujah!
