The Marks of a Disciple

8.16.20 - Persecution for Christ Places us in Good Company! (Matthew 5:11-12)

If someone invited you on a journey, and began their invitation by saying, “The path is treacherous, and we might suffer greatly, but there is wonderful treasure at the end,” you would certainly think hard about whether or not such a venture would be worth it. In our passage for today (Matthew 5:11-12), Jesus invites His followers to count the cost of Christian discipleship. His way is the way of opposition and abuse, and yet His way leads to eternal life. For the Christian, opposition and persecution are seen in a new light. We recognize the redemptive value of suffering for Jesus’s sake, and we realize that all who have followed the Lord before us have had to endure pain and hardship. The path of Jesus, although difficult, places us in good company. There is treasure awaiting us, the true treasure of being with the Lord forever in the New Heaven and New Earth. The path of Christian discipleship is difficult, but the King is worth it!
