Following The King

1.29.17 Sermon - Mark 6:7-29

Jesus is the source of true joy and peace! He satisfies our deepest longings by bringing us into fellowship with God. He makes us new creation and transforms us from the inside out! The Christian life is truly one of immeasurable pleasure, and yet it is also a difficult road marked with suffering and trials. When presented with the gospel we must count the cost. When sharing the gospel we must accurately convey the message Jesus presented to His early followers. He said, “If anyone comes after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Mark 8.34). Following Jesus is more than checking a box! It entails a complete realignment of values; death to self; a new allegiance to a new King. It invites opposition and persecution. It’s certainly not popular in the eyes of the world. In our passage we see Jesus preparing His followers for a mission full of difficulty, rejection and even death. However, He gives them authority and calls them to depend on Him and His strength. There is no greater joy than following King Jesus. Yes, it may be difficult at times, but in Christ we have access to an unending supply of God’s grace and provision. He is with us! When it comes to following Jesus, be sure count the cost. But remember the words of Jesus in Matthew 7:13-14: “(13) Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. (14) For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”
